"Thank you, ma'am."
"Ma'am, is there anything you need help with?"
"Pardon me, ma'am..."
"Ma'am, could I get some creamer for my coffee?"

At first glance, one probably wouldn't find anything odd about the above sentences, but hearing that word always sets alarms off in my head. Thought #1: "Ma'am?!" Thought #2: "Do I look old enough to be called ma'am?!??"
It just seems very strange to me. Shouldn't I be called "miss"? I mean, I've only just turned 21 this year! And, as much as I might hate to admit it, "mature" is nowhere near the top of the list of words I (or anyone else, for that matter) would use to describe myself. So, the question is, when did I go from being a teenager/young adult to being called "ma'am"?! It sounds so... so...
...so MATRONLY! *facepalm*
Don't get me wrong--it's not that I don't appreciate the courtesy, but... "ma'am"??
*whimpers (but only to hide a fit of laughter at the absurdity of it all)*
Ooo~oi! Why me?

See I have a fun and intriguing way to deal with this. I look at them(the offender) square in the face- and go "Man, you really know how to make somebody feel old, sir." (or ma'am depending) Always throws them off balance and they don't know what to do.
LOL.
Y'know, I'd do that, but usually I'm already off-balance myself!
*Hugs*. You're not old. . .or mature. .I mean, yes you are - mature. I mean, you're not mature in years, you're mature in attitude. You know? *Smacks forehead*. I'm trying to say something and it's not working so I give up...for now. *Hugs*.
You're my awesome Mel. End of story. ;).
Good words.
